2004 Olympics And Yachting In Greece

Everybody knows that the Olympic Games are due to be held in Athens in 2004. Apart from the accepted consequences, positive and negative, for the city of Athens and Greece in general this sporting extravaganza will seriously affect the yachting fraternity from mid-July to mid-September.

Two major crises will afflict the greater Athens area i.e. transportation and accommodation. I will refer to certain aspects of transportation later but the accommodation problem will directly affect yachtsmen. How, you might ask ? I will tell you.

Steroids* - Homeruns* - Asterisks* - Nonsense

With Barry Bonds on the verge of breaking Hank Aaron’s all time home run record, one has to wonder if all the hoopla is logical or not. Steroids follow Bonds continually and there is still no proof that he ever did any of the substances. Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa are under the looking glass as well and again there is no proof that they did the roids or not.

Immortal Runners - Rob Decastella

As tough as the Australian countryside and as kind and forthcoming as the best of its people, Rob DeCastella represents one of the all-time greats of running, giving the sport a new edge and flavour with his unprecedented racing zeal. In the eighties DeCastella, or ‘Deek’ as he is affectionately known by friends, became for the marathon what his fellow Australian Ron Clarke was for the 10,000 metres in the sixties - an icon, inspiration and example.

Exploring The Outdoors With A First Aid Kit For Hiking

Hiking can be one of the most wonderful activities you can pursue; physical activity in beautiful surroundings; exploring new places; breathing in fresh air. Unfortunately it can also be one of best places to experience a myriad of injuries. Because of the nature of the activity – traveling, sometimes solo, in a secluded setting – it is absolutely imperative to carry a first aid kit for hiking.

A first aid kit for hiking includes a number of important things and should be carried with you at all times. Make sure the container is lightweight and easily transportable as you will more than likely carry it with your other supplies in your backpack.

Scuba Tanks

In order to overcome the limitations of the human body divers carrying scuba tanks to provide a breathing gas at ambient pressure. Scuba tanks are also known as cylinders or bottles and normally in recreational diving the breathing gas is air. Some non-divers will refer to the tanks as oxygen tanks or bottles, but this is incorrect – oxygen is toxic when breathed in high concentration at depth and so pure oxygen is never used in recreational diving.

The world of skiing is becoming increasingly more interesting as new ski frontiers open up, offering snow sport fans the chance to ski in more exotic locations than ever before. Japan, Chile, Lebanon, Slovakia, Bulgaria and many more countries not renowned for their mountains are attracting British skiers who are looking for a ski experience that’s a little out of the ordinary.

However, despite the availability of these new destinations, which are gaining a bigger slice of the ski market, France still remains the most popular location to ski for the Brits and it’s not hard to see why.

Golf Handicap

Innovation and Invention -

Sometime in the early 20th century, The USGA invented the handicap system for golfers. It has been called “The Great Equalizer” because it made it possible for golfers with all different skill levels to play against each other in the great spirit of competition. If the average score of one player is 96 and they wish to compete with a player whose average is 74, the handicap system now makes this possible. Golfers from all skill levels now enjoy the game of golf as if they were evenly matched and it makes for a great game every time!

Oahu Hawaii, The Birthplace Of Surfing, Still Shreds

Hawaii, especially the island of Oahu, has long been considered the birthplace of surfing. The first written description of he’e nalu - the Hawaiian term for surfing – is described in a journal entry of Captain James King in March 1779, three months after the death of Captain James Cook, credited with first discovering the Hawaiian Islands in 1778:

“Twenty or thirty of the natives, taking each a long narrow board, rounded at the ends, set out together from the shore. Their first object is to place themselves on the summit of the largest surge, by which they are driven along with amazing rapidity toward the shore.”
