Gum Disease and Higher Chances of Cancer
According to a new research by the Imperial College of
London, gum diseases can lead to a higher chance of cancer. The most common cancers that are linked to
gum disease includes pancreatic, lung, kidneys, as well as blood cancers.
The basic link joining the gum disease and cancers is
because of the weakened immune system. This
fact was outlined by going through the medical records of about 50,000
individuals, which strengthened the fact mentioned above.
The study showed that the major cause of gum diseases was
due to the bacterial infection and it was seen mostly in individuals who were
smokers. Based on the statistics it was
derived that those individuals who have gum disease have 14% more chance to
develop cancer compared to those individuals who do not have gum infection.
There is a 50% increase in the risk of developing kidney
cancer, 50% pancreatic cancer , 30% blood cancers and about a third of
developing lung cancer. The theory
suggesting the fact that gum disease can cause cancer is because gum infection
has a tendency to spread infection to various parts of the body.
It is highly recommended that individuals who suffer from
dental problems must seek medical treatment as soon as possible to decrease the
risk of developing cancer.
